5 Ways To Beat Writer’s Block

IMG_0035

Whether you are writer by passion or profession, it is inevitable that you will hit a block at some stage, but don’t get discouraged because like everything in life there is a way around it and today I am on hand to share some of the writer’s block tips that help me overcome it each time.

Start reading more.

Usually my writing and reading slumps go hand in hand. When I am at a loss for ideas, I know I must take the time to read. This where I usually pick up a book, click for a blog post or even listen to an audiobook or podcast. It makes a big difference to your writing once you have material to inspire you. (Hit a reading slump? Check out my post on 7 Ways To Beat a Reading Slump)

Don’t edit while you write.

This is possibly one of the worst things you can do when checking and editing will only slow you down. Instead, let your writing flow continue by getting it out of your system first. Once finished, go back and edit.

Don’t stare at a blank page, write a quick outline.

I know I’ve hit a serious writer’s block when staring at a blank page taunts me rather than inspires me. When this happens, I like to make small notes (usually in my phone) of any ideas had. Eventually I piece them altogether, and before I know it I have a full blown blog post or short story sitting in front of me.

Write what you feel.

Be it a blog post, short story or even an essay, don’t start out with a mindset of “I need to write what others want to read” As cliché as it sounds, you need to be true to you. Just write what you are inspired by and you’ll quickly find that those pieces will be the one’s most relatable to others.

Take a break.

If all else fails, simply take a break. It can be quite draining when you try to write at a time where you’re just not motivated to, so switch off your laptop or close your notebook and take time out to go for a walk or watch movie, anything to clear your head and have you ready to pick up a pen.

If you have certain tricks that help you overcome your writer’s block, don’t forget to let me know in the comments below, I would love to hear what works for you!
