Digital Detox | How and why I take a step back from social media

I have had internet and technology surrounding me from day one. My parents have always told me of how I first used a computer at the age of two and I have flashbacks of hitting up nickeloden.com to play my favourite games. Facebook and YouTube were a thing long before I was deemed old enough to use them and nowadays I am a regular on the likes of Twitter and Instagram. However it’s all still relevantly new and ever changing.

Social media gets a bad rep, and although I agree it can have a negative impact on people it can also have a positive one when used correctly, but it’s important to have balance. Something I think I have succeeded in with my years of internet use.

As you probably have gathered, I enjoy the time being online but when it gets overwhelming or if I think I’m coming away from it feeling deflated rather than motivated I know it’s time to change something about it or to just step back from it completely.

Here’s a few steps on how I achieve just that.

Negative people, sites, news.

If you feel your social media use is getting you down it’s because you’re letting it. I’m going to let you in on a little secret here, you control everything you see, read, watch and hear. Every so often I’ll have a social media clear out and unfollow or unsubscribe to any channel who’s content no longer relates to me, having a negative impact on me or have outgrown. If there’s something online you see that you don’t agree with or you come across someone leaving comments to unsettle you, unfollow, block and report. Those options are there for a reason and it’s your right to invest your time into what you want.

Stop caring about numbers and likes

If you spend a lot of time online it’s easy to get consumed by the world of numbers and likes. Forget that! Your online profile is not a representation of who you are as a person.

Leave the phone behind/put on airplane mode

If you’re heading out for a walk or meeting up with family/friends ask yourself if you really need your phone before heading out the door. If you end up going on a short walk then maybe you could leave your phone behind of if you want music with the walk or plan on leaving your home for a period of time take a second to click into airplane mode so you won’t get inundated with notifications that will distract you.

Do something that’s not internet related

Read, bake, talk a walk or paint a picture. Setting time aside to participate in something that’s not connected to your wi-fi is good for your mind and soul!

Take an hour off social media before bed

It’s a proven fact that staring into your phone and checking in on the world in the hours before bed keeps you wide awake and wrecks your sleeping pattern. So do yourself a favour and disconnect for at least an hour before you decide to catch some z’s. This is where I usually rely on airplane mode and choose to settle down with a good book.

Don’t check your phone first thing in the morning.

Unless you’re waiting on an important message or call there is no need to unlock your phone the minute you wake. Start your day a fresh, because chances are you won’t miss much and it will all still be there in a few hours anyway. This can be a hard habit to break but you’ll be happier for it. Trust me!

That’s just my two cents worth. What helps you to disconnect from the online world and reconnect with the real one? I’d love to know so let me know in the comments below!

  1. [ Smiles ] Good advice pertaining to detoxing from social media.

In reality, social media is a tool. But, unfortunately, a large percentage of people are heavily addicted to it.

    1. Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I totally agree, social media can be great but like everything in life you got to have balance. It’s so easy to get addicted, almost too easy.

This is a great post and I really enjoyed it! I’ve recently noticed that negative comments and news are getting me down, and I’m thinking about taking a step back from social media, even if it’s just 30 minutes here and there. It can make a huge difference! In fact, the past few days I’ve made the conscious effort to put my phone away before bed and read a book instead. I actually loved how peaceful it felt.

Thank you! I think it’s so important to have balance between your reality/online presence because the lines can get blurred. We sometimes forget that we choose to be online and therefore forget that we can control our use. Isn’t it the best feeling to be going to bed without being bombarded with the weight of the world? There’s a time and place for these things and my social media use has become so much more enjoyable for it!

    1. Good to hear, it’s so easy to get sucked in. One minute you’re scrolling through Instagram and the next thing you know it’s three hours later. 😆

    1. I’m making the conscious effort to put down my phone and live more in the moment too. It does your soul good to have real face time with a person. 🙂

  6. This is great. I keep telling myself to have a social media clear out but apparently some slightly more interesting things keep happening to distract me. I love what you said about leaving your phone behind. It breaks my heart when I see a table of people and everyone has a screen in front of them with little to no conversation. I don’t think I’d do too well with a full detox but it is really important to forget about them sometimes x

    1. If you do your first clear out, you’ll never look back. It is the best feeling to be rid of content that possibly weighs you down. I’m glad you liked that point because I think it’s important to know, I only became good at leaving my phone behind or putting it in airplane mode in the past year but it’s honestly life changing not to be living behind a screen, there’s a time and a place and we can miss a lot when we think we’re catching up on all the news on our phones. x

  9. I really am in dire need of a digital detox! I’ve been letting silly things get to me that I almost had a breakdown yesterday which is stupid. I think I need to take a leaf out of your book and do a massive clearout and also do some drawing to take my mind off my phone.

    1. It quite easy to fall into that spiral of negativity. Most social media profiles are highlight reels of one’s life and we totally forget that sometimes. The online world can be fun but it’s not the be all and end all! I really recommend doing a clear out, you’d be amazed at the difference it makes!

  10. I love these tips because they’re more realistic than a lot of the “quit social media” posts I see. These are actually goals that I feel I could achieve and goals that will actually make me feel better. I completely agree with taking a step back from social media from time to time. It’s so important to remember what’s truly important, but to also realize that there are so many great things that come from social media, as long as you take breaks from it and do the things you suggested in this post. Thanks for this wonderful advice!

This is the thing, I see so much advice on completely cutting social media out of your life for a period of time. If that works, great, but social media and technology aren’t going anywhere anytime soon and I think it’s best we learn how to balance our online use instead of ignoring it. A lot of good can come from social media too, I agree! I’m glad you’re finding these tips helpful, I was really keen to create an achievable and accessible guide for those who enjoy their online time.

  12. I totally agree, before bed the phone needs to be away. I’ve spent countless hours in bed on my phone, losing sleep. It’s never worth it and always makes me wake up super cranky! I love reading these kinds of posts, well written Denise! xx

    1. Most nights I’m good and put the phone away but if I don’t I can really feel it the next morning too. It keeps your brain active and it’s so much harder to sleep then! Thank you so much Alice, that is so nice to hear. X
